Festive fusionista

With Raksha Bandhan and Ganpati festivities around the corner, it’s time to create a brand new closet, which is contemporary in style and Indian at the core. It’s time to steer clear of the gloomy blacks and greys and embrace a riot of colours like never before. Having toyed with Indo-Western fusion for years now – I see this fusionista dressing as the ultimate sartorial catalyst, which is fail proof. Nothing works on the Indian olive skin tone better than a pop palette of colours, shine-on bling and statement jewellery. This festive season, say hello to the now-trending cape-utta (a hybrid of cape and dupatta) and sharara pants or wide-legged, flowy trousers.

The drama exuded by a cape look is limit-less and will prove to be the ultimate weapon in your festive wardrobe.

Opt for silhouettes that accentuate your body and pick from the timeless and classic Indian textiles. A draped pre-stitched sari or a metallic lehenga are perfect traditional looks with a twist. The trousers or bottoms can make or break your ensemble. The trick is to keep them super casual. For instance, pair a salwar with a sequinned or a digital print T-shirt or gravitate towards a solid kurta style.

Dhoti pants with vibrant peplum detailings and draped tops are making their presence felt across the board. As you entertain your friends and family, make an impression in a geometrical patterned front-slit  shift dress.  Add a pair of chiffon palazzo pants to the look and you’ve nailed the ensemble.

One can’t go wrong with Baroque embroideries, which is also a major runway story internationally, what with the likes of Balmain and Gucci embracing it with great gusto. Invest in a Victorian cropped jacket and a cowl gown. All you need is a hand-embroidered shrug and you’re  good to go.Channel your inner nomad slicker in a boho skirt and team it with a cowl top. The ubiquitous Patiala salwars can be sure-shot sartorial winners when clubbed with peasant tops. Taking of tops, the cold-shoulder crop tops aren’t going out anytime soon and look sensational when teamed with handwoven lehengas.

Finish the look with a power blow-dry, a bold pouch and statement jhumkas. Pick a dramatic but minimal accessory and focus on one feature – either your eyes or the mouth. A sleek pony tail or a messy chignon can never let you down.
