For a noble cause

I embarked on a relentless battle against the deadly menace of cancer after I lost my father and brother-in-law to it. Since the cause is so close to my heart and I feel strongly about it, I always give it my 100 per cent and this year too, I plunged into the preparation for my annual fundraiser almost six months ago. Meeting the Hospital doctors, finalising the venue, curating the pieces for the auction took a great deal of time and effort. At the same time, I let my creative freak flag high and worked on an exclusive collection that I would showcase at the fundraiser and also complement the gravity of the cause.

The vision of my A/W2018 collection was clearly etched in my head and I was crystal clear about the imagery I wanted to create. The collection celebrated the idea of wild, free-spirited beauty, unencumbered by any restrictions. And what better than a lush, breathtaking forest to shoot the campaign? Nothing says wild and free than the lovely lap of mother nature and there I was shooting my fearless-yet-fun pieces against the exotic backdrop of verdant greens, soul-searing forest trails, visually sumptuous waterfalls and dramatic rivulets. A two-hours drive away from the rough-and-tumble of Mumbai, my crew and I reached the virgin greens of Badlapur to execute our vision into timeless images.

It was perhaps the most challenging shoot and evoked  an array of sentiments. The whole experience was a far cry from the controlled studio shoot environment and my team and I moved out of our comfort zone to give it out best shot. for-a-noble-cause-01At the end of it, I was happy with the way images shaped up and looked. Once you see your work translating into reality, it’s a high which can’t be explained.

To ensure everyone was on the same page, closer to the event date, I met with Anu Ahuja – my choreographer and Nazneen my decorator. I had already briefed them about the jungle-inspired backdrop that I had desired to complement the animalistic pieces. We discussed at length the layout and the lighting – all of which can make or break a show. Also, an evening of this scale merited a menu, which was out of the ordinary and I along with the hotel staff curated it together.

In the end, we managed to pull off  a breathtaking soiree, which was a visual spectacle at the  Taj Mahal Palace hotel. I was elated to see the glamourati and the cinemarati showing up to extend their solidarity for my cause. The talented Boman Irani helmed the live auction and enthralled the audience with his rip-roaring repartees. Bollywood stars Jackie Shroff and Kunal Kapoor also graced the occasion. MP Poonam Mahajan spoke a few words to open the evenings proceedings.

Fashion for a great cause, MCan was able to raise through donations, cheques and bids around Rs 1.25 crores.

A moment of gratitude

The sweat of the brow, the anxiety of meeting deadlines, the hectic schedules, the awry sleep hours, the umpteen meetings, the angst over whether things will go as per plan….it’s all over. Phew….Putting together an event is a great task and no matter how well in advance you start working towards it, the run up to the final evening is nothing short of sheer craziness.

Fashion For a Cause

Nothing inspires me more than juxtaposing my love for the dynamism of design with a charitable cause. And over the years, I’ve found my calling in raising awareness and funds to help cancer patients across the social spectrum. Through my foundation MCan, I have been working closely with the Tata Memorial hospital to address this significant cause for the last couple of years. And it goes without saying that it’s the high point of my work calendar and I tend to put my heart and soul into it. I’m proud to say that in the three years since its inception, we have been able to raise over a crore-and-half for Tata Memorial Hospital. This year, when Terry Fox Foundation’s India committee asked me to host an exclusive and one-of-a-kind live fashion showcase for their fundraiser, I was overwhelmed.

A Christmassy Affair!

cover photo

I have always loved to engage myself in different activities. While designing couture is my passion, I have also designed jewellery, costumes for theatre and planned enchanting events. Every endeavour brings a new challenge. I have thoroughly enjoyed facing these challenges and the adrenaline that comes along with them. They put my creativity to test and to be honest there is a different charm in excelling.

Fashion is something I am passionate about – for me it is the most exhilarating way of propagating my experiences, enthusiasm and reverie with others. I am an artist forever seeking a new canvas to express my creativity. Be it my collections, jewellery, my fashion shows or events that I organise, I have always enjoyed to put my visions and thoughts into reality. And I take it as a challenge to raise the bar, surpass the expectations and deliver my best every time. So I was excited when I was approached to redesign the cabana look at Asilo using Grey Goose’s cocktail collection as inspiration along with few others from my fraternity.

And it feels just like yesterday…..The weariness and fatigue from which I am still coming out of, seems nothing in comparison to the adrenaline rush that I faced. With the overwhelming support & kindness of my friends and family I was able to embark towards setting it free… Yes BreakFree my charity fund-raiser this year for Mcan raised a huge amount for the Tata Memorial Hospital…And still counting…

Fashion, Art and History

Art and culture have always gone hand in hand. They have conjointly influenced the fashion trends for eons. Now imagine an occasion where dignitaries from the world of fashion, education, art and culture come together.

I had the privilege to be a part of one such occasion last weekend. I was invited by Dr. Indu Shahani, principal of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics and Ranjit Shahani at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya. We all know it by its former name, the Prince of Wales museum of Western India.

Set Beautiful Free

cover pic

The day I agreed to be the style partner for Vivek Oberoi’s charity event “Set Beautiful Free”, I knew that this year’s Raksha Bandhan is going to be a special one. Right from designing the outfits for the girls to spending time with them, every moment was an exhilarating one.
Walking into the green room backstage on the day of the event, the excitement of the little girls was palpable as they sprinted around. It was gratifying, to say the least, for me to see them so euphoric. They were ecstatic to get photographed in their lehengas.

High Octane Glamour

The week following the preview of my summer/resort collection has been personally frenetic with glitzy lunches and conversations to previews of indigenous breathtaking art as well as world-renowned soul-searing sculptures. Birkins and Choos and Louboutins and Pradas–the week has been every fashionista’s delight with the soirées serving as runways. This weekend, in particular, was one of high-octane glamour for the city’s hoi-polloi–night Derby, world-class art, fashion–it’s been simply wow.

At Parvez Damania and Harinder Singh’s private preview of artist Nishant Dange’s solo exhibition, we were privy to stunning art pieces by a very shy and young artist.

Called The Shots!

I woke up this morning with the biggest smile on my face—it was like I had slept with a hanger in my mouth! After days and weeks and months of going nuts, I finally launched my summer/resort wear collection, Mineral Blue, last evening, and what an event it was!

I’m still reeling from the compliments and I am particularly proud of this event. The decor, my collection and even how I had paired my look with the theme of the event wowed my guests. The decor was exquisite—an ethereal tunnel of twigs, orchids, blue bulbs and cherry blossoms that led the way had a fairytale-like effect.
